Empowering Minds, Celebrating Women
"On the day when it will be possible for a woman to love not in her weakness but in strength, not to escape herself but to find herself, not to abase herself but to assert herself – on that day love will become for her, as for man, a source of life and not of mortal danger."
---Simone De Beauvoir
Simone De Beauvoir
Simone De Beauvoir was a French philosopher and writer. Her famous book, The Second Sex, grandly known as “The Feminist Bible”, discussed the foundation and formation of women’s oppression, establishing the base of contemporary feminism. The famous quote “One is not born, but rather becomes, woman” reveals the complexity women hold that is shaped by their oppressed situation in Society. Her recognition of the subjugation of women worked reciprocally with her other philosophical ideas, including existentialism, identity, and freedom, that influenced not only women but human beings.
Her idea of existentialism of that no one is born with a destiny or meaning, but one should live an authentic life and either create or find the meaning of living inspired lives and others to live a life of the pursuit of true self. It is interesting that as a woman who fought for the identity of herself and others, she was largely bound by her relationship with a man, which tends to be the first thing some may think of when talking about Beauvoir. While the partnership had been controversial and bonded to her reputation, to Beauvoir herself, it was a part of her shaping her authenticity and exercising freedom.
“I am too intelligent, too demanding, and too resourceful for anyone to be able to take charge of me entirely. No one knows me or loves me completely. I have only myself”
---Simone De Beauvoir
Her ideas were conveyed not only through essays but novels and autobiographies, including "Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter” and” A Very Easy Death”. A feminist is only a part of her, overall, she is a philosopher, a philosopher who lives and loves, awakens, awakens.
