Interview with Professor Jinglan Yan
- Jessica Wu
In this interview, I had the privilege of speaking with Professor Jinglan Yan, a well-known professor at East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai who specializes in English literature. She graduated from Peking University in 1979 with a degree in English language and literature and later studied abroad at Manchester University. Our conversation delved into her motivations for pursuing humanities, the evolution of humanities education in China, and the importance of studying subjects like literature, history, and philosophy in today’s world. We also explored challenges in the modern world, such as the impact of artificial intelligence on the humanities, and discussed practical advice for those passionate about pursuing a career in this field despite the perceived difficulties. This interview provides a perspective on the enduring value of the humanities.
